Ive had the set about 1 week, and bought it after careful research.
It is certainaly the best dollar per 1080p inch available.I am very happy with the size, look, interfaces, and picture quality.I have since found out although it can display 1080p content, it cannot receive 1080p content, only 1080i as a max.Not a big deal now as there is no 1080p content, but could be an issue when HD-DVDs come out.Apparently only the HP DLP sets can receive 1080p, not Toshiba, Samsung, nor Mitsubishi.

I was very happy with buying from Amazon; no tax, low ship fee, and it was white glove delivered right into my great room, all within 5 days of purchase.

Review of Symbio 160HD4 Audio/Video Hard Drive (AVHD) Recorder

Picked up this HD DVR to work with my Toshiba 42HP95 plasma screen.
First the good things.It works seemlessly with the TV Guide On Screen guide. I know there were problems with the TV Guide in the 2004 Toshiba TVs but so far I haven't had any problems with mine and the one touch recording and future recording capabilites work well.The DVR also records HD programming.That alone was worth the money.I was paying $20/month for that capability from the cable company.So for the basic stuff it works well.

What it doesn't do well.I knew before purchasing this that it didn't have an internal tuner.The DVR works in conjuntion with the TV's tuner.What that means is that if you're recording a program you cannot even change the input on the TV.The other problems I've found is that while you're recording a program you can't even pause live TV or watch a previously recorded program.The latter I'm assuming is because there is no built in tuner.I can see that I won't be retiring my ReplayTVs yet but at least it gives me an option when I want to record an HD program.

After months of trying various combinations of settings, and having email exchanges with D-Link Technical Support, they finally admitted that the DSM-520 does NOT do photos in HD. It downsizes them to DVD quality. My 1600 x 1200 photos do not look great on our big screen HD TV - a big disappointment.

Purchased this for a home theater system, creating a 120" display.

Advantages:
1. Screen takes up zero space.
2. Projector can be placed off center, with adjustments to compensate the angle.
3. Bright, even in bulb saving mode.
4. Display can be bigger than any plasma screen on the market.
5. Costs less than a decent sized plasma screen.
6. A very portable television.
7. Can connect a PC to view photo collections, internet, etc.
8. Works very well on a blank wall (doesn't have to be white).
9. Perfect for events at home or away.
10. Wow factor!

Additional requirements:
1. Tuner to watch television (vcr works).
2. Audio system for sound.
3. Creative setup/placement of cabling and components.
4. Large blank wall with adequate distance from projector location.
5. Control of ambient lighting.
6. Bulb replacement every 3000 hours (equates to over 1000 movies)

I have this screen in 100" size and think it is a great value for the money compared to the Stewart Firehawk.I use this screen with the Sharp 10K DLP projector.

The finish of the pro trim is excellent, the assembly instructions were very good and the wall mounting procedure went smoothly with two people.

As with anything like this you should try to view some of your own source material before deciding.

Review of Mirage Prestige S10 Black 10-inch 300 Watt Powered Subwoofer

I'm a firm believer in mirage products. They offer an extremely good value as far as other low to mid-priced speakers go. This sub has a beautiful gloss black box that isn't too big and looks very nice! As far as it's sound, as I mentioned it's very smooth, it won't thump and add bass to things like my previous cheaper subs did. If you like subs that thump a lot and add bass where it shouldn't be and are calling attention to them selves all the time, just get any off the cheaper name brands because this sub wont be for you! When called upon, this sub has the most musical powerful bass I ever heard! It blends in very nicely with music and has some extremely powerful bass on movies! Just ask my neighbors, I'm not even blasting my denon receiver when I play movies and the guy behind me has complained about it, the subs not even broken in yet, I've only had it a week. Mirage says to give it 50 hours to break in where it will sound better yet, my other subs were the same way to, they need time to loosen up a little before there at full capacity. I highly recommend this sub, at this price from crutchfield it's simply a steal and flat out bargain!!! This is a taste of what real high end audio sounds like!

These bookshelf speakers are great.I have many varieties from Bose, JBL and other Klipsch and these have to be the best so far.I must say that the clarity and projection of the Tatrix Horn is unbelievable and I wouldn't trade them for anything!They are awesome for 2ch music or even for 5-7.1 surround sound.Very small.Only con is the bass port is on the back so you have to keep it a good 2+ feet from the wall.

Review of Yamaha YHT-590BL Home Theater in a Box (Black)

I wanted a nice sound system to compliment my Sony 40-inch LCD screen. Originally I purchased Onkyo 3100, however, it did not have any HDMI connections and it would cause the video to stutter on programs in HD. I wanted the Onkyo 5100 but the speakers were simply enormous. I decided to go with Yamaha YHT-590 because of the receiver and the slim looking speakers. The installation took about 45 minutes as I had to cut and splice the thin looking wire (18 gauge). Once plugged in everything sounded excellent. Cannon fire in Master and Commander and the Pirates of the Caribbean was thundering and simply mind blowing. Depth charges in Das Boot...well you have to hear it to really appreciate it. :-).

One of the previous reviewers stated that the center speaker had to be turned down to hear the dialogue and such. Setup options in the receiver allow for numerous tweaks and options which you'll want to play with as the size of your room and the room acoustics will differ from user to user. I have an odd living room with the kitchen right next to it. I had to manually adjust the distance from the speakers to our sitting position to fully optimize the sound. There are also options that will allow you to adjust audio volume from source to source....Again, to fully enjoy any HT system you'll have to spend an hour or so to make sure its configured properly. Also, of note is that I wanted to upgrade the cheap looking wire and I purchased Monster XP which is a 14 gauge thick wire. It did not make any difference in sound whatsoever....Overall, very pleased with this system, looks great and it sounds even better. Highly recommended.

I received my HDMI cable within 5 days from purchasing online. I didn't expect the best or top of the line cable for $3.00 however it does the job. Now if only we can get higher quality cables for that price life would be great. The only problem I have had with the cable is the HDMI side of the cable is a little loose but how often do you move the cable once you have it in place.

I used this cable with my new Sony (forget model) upconverting DVD player. It works fine. Obviously in the end, it is your DVD player and TV that do the magic. This guy is merely the messenger. If not anything, it is a one to one cable connection as opposed to an S-Video and Audio cable. The price of HDMI cable seem to vary from outrageously 100$ to ridculously 15$ making me wonder if there was QC issue. I stuck with Acoustic Research because it is a well known company.

I bought this as a replacement for my broken after 6 months Toshiba DVD player.The quality was noticeably worse.The only thing good about it was it can play so many formats.So after about 4 months I bought the Toshiba HD DVD A-3 and it is the best upconverter out of all of them.Shouldn't have wasted my time with the LG.

Review of Jamo S606 HCS 3 Studio Speaker (Single, Black)

I had never heard of jamo befor I found them here, but I found out that they are owned by klipsch so I figured that the were probably a good brand and mabey klipsch was selling them cheap to gain recognition in the US so I bought these thinking that if they were no good at least they were cheap.But it turns out that they are very good speakers even compared to speakers that cost three times as much. I have done a side by side comparison with klipsch icon vf-35($499 each) and def tech bp7006($649 each).The jamo was much smoother in the high end and had far better bass and mid range responce than the klipsch.the jamo and def tech were nearly the same in mid and high end sound with the def tech having a better bass responce with there built in amp but ether way you go you will still need a separet sub for movie lfe so the built in amp on the def tech is really a wast of power and also limets placement because they need an outlet neer by. the jamos do have good bass responce for most music. I've run a 31hz signal through them and heard it good, just a little bit quieter than the 50hz tone, but for movies with really low bass you will still need a powered sub. I also compared the center channel speakers for all three of these, the included jamo, the klipsch vc-?($250) and the def tech procenter 1000($220) the jamo beat the other two hands down, both the klipsch and the def tech had a tinny or harshnes sound to them at the high end.

[Anyone remembers the old "I am not going to spend a lot for this muffler" commercial?]

Just in case someone may feel guilty for not paying a lot more for, basically the same thing, let's look at one of our top of the line offers in premium HDMI, Monster HDMI 1000HD Ultra-High Speed HDMI Cable (2 meters) and do a quick comparison.

For a lot less, the BLUE Advanced supports the HDMI 1.3a/b standard. Any HDMI 1.3 cable can carry up to 10.2 Gbit/s. Hmmm... I suppose the Monster is much better, right? Well... it "guarantees a certified cable bandwidth of 10.2" Okay, but the Monster also supports "x.v.Color, and Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD". It turns out that, all of the above, and more, are part of the HDMI 1.3 specs and they are fully supported by every cable that complies to the standard and can be had for about 95% less in the Premium Gold. The expensive brand presentation simply enumerates the HDMI 1.3 specs as if it being HDMI 1.3 compliant was a really big deal. It is not a big deal. Even a cable that costs 95% less is HDMI 1.3 compliant.

My suggestion: if you think that the proponents of the expensive brand have a point when they claim that their product is a lot more durable, buy TWO Blue Advanced wires and still pay significantly less than half of what you would pay for one of the expensive ones.

My personal experience: I've never paid 'a lot' for an HDMI cable because it makes no sense to pay more. I took home one of the 'expensive' ones once because the salesman promised to take it back if I wasn't amazed by the difference. It made zero difference and I returned it.

Ok - where do I start.You know the saying which goes "you get what you pay for."Well this is certainly the case with these cables.I ordered a total of 6 of these cables.4 seem to work perfectly, but 2 had problems which I will detail below.

The first cablewas connected to a 1080p capable television, and it would not go above 1080i.Once I swapped it with another cable fm this manufacturer - the higher resolution was accepted.

The second cable with an issue, was connected to a television with a max resolution of 720. When my satellite receiver was set to push the 720p signal, the picture was there without any sound (weird, huh?)Once I switched out the cable to another cable fm the manufacturer - all was well.Basically I guess I can't complain about these due to the price, but make sure you are able to check all your cables on all possible resolutions before you install them especially if you are hiding them behind a wall like I did.By the way, I didn't send the bad one back since it would cost me more to ship them than just to take it on the chin at this point.

Having purchased and returned a good number of 7" portable DVD players (Apex, Initial, Mintek), I was slowing coming to the conclusion that there's no such thing as a GOOD $... portable DVD player.Then I came across this little beauty at Amazon.com and decided to give it one more try.I've had the player for about a week now, and I am happy to report that I am most pleasantly surprised by how good this players is.I've seen quite a few movies on this unit and have not experienced any problems.

The CyberHome 712 has all the standard features of your average 7" DVD player (mp3, jpeg, remote control, home/car adapter, AV output & input, Dolby digital & DTS outputs, etc), plus a few other nice extras.What's most unusual is that the outer casing, and the DVD lid/deck are all made of diecast metal, while similar units are made of painted plastic.Although the metal case adds weight to the unit, it also gives it a substantial and robust feel.Another unusual feature for this price range is the progressive scan output (componet cables are included.)That means you can use this player with your HDTV and display your movies in all of their 480P, non-interlaced glory.The rechargeble lithium ion battery has a claimed life of 4 hrs between charges, while other batteries typically claim to have between 2-3 hrs.So far, I've only been able to get about 3 hrs out of each charge, but that's more than enough time for just about any movie.

The player is not without flaws though.The 7" LCD screen is not of the active matrix type, so while it is bright and vibrant at the proper angle, it is difficult to see when you are way off to the side.Also the brightness level returns to the default level every time the unit shuts off, so you will have to re-adjust the screen at the beginning of every movie.

Overall, I am very happy with my purchase, and would recommend this unit to anymore looking for a quality product at a reasonable price.For the brand conscious folks, Toshiba offers some very nice players at substantially higher prices.For my money, the Cyberhome 712 will do just fine.

I tried it with my DIRECTV HR20 and my Samsung Blu-ray player.Neither worked either together or with the other unplugged from the switch.The remote did not work either.Maybe it was the battery, but since the unit didn't work, I didn't bother trying a different one.No instructions except on the back of the box.No support number and no troubleshooting hints or website.Even for $47 you would expect it to work.

We're not audiophiles but a new 47" hdtv deserves good sound, right? So, we just grabbed the cheapest one which happened to be this unit. It was so easy to hook up that I thought I must have done something wrong or missed something but it works great. The sound is fine for these old ears and I'm still trying to figure out the different formats. It has a plug in for the ipod but I have to buy a dock separate. There is also no digital audio in or a lot of other plug options in the back. I guess I can use rca Y cables at teh audio input if we get a blueray player in the future, huh? The unit also takes up a lot of shelf space being wide and deep, though thin. The remote is bland and difficult to use in low light. It has an am/fm tuner so it can double as a mini stereo system without a lot of hardware.

When I was looking for HDMI cables for my LCD, I thought the more expensive cables were the only way to go so I bought a $200 Monster cable.Then I read about HDMI technology spiting out only 1's and 0's (digital) so I thought what the heck, go with the cheaper cables.I returned the Monster and found this cable.Twenty times less expensive than the first one I bought and it performs the same!Boy, I'm sure glad I went this rout or else I'd be kicking myself.Everyone should be doing the same too.I have 2 more cables coming my way.Only thing I wish they'd do was carry shorter cables, around 3 feet.

Review of INSTEN Premium HDMI M / M Cable 1.3, 6 FT, Metal Black

I purchased the same cable of 25ft. distance on ebay about a week ago and I was very impressed. Looking at the actual picture eforcity provides does not do it justice. This cable is jacketed in a hard sturdy nylon sleeve that could take the worst from my cat and come out unscathed.

Simply put, this is the kind of cable you buy for you hi def systems. It's got everything the expensive vendors have and the jacketing is better than any I've come across. I would recommend this brand to anyone looking for a high quality hdmi for a good price. Even bought a 10ft. for my co worker.

Review of DISH Player-DVR 510 - DVR - 100 hour(s) - DISH network

I used to consider DirecTV to be the preferred choice of satellite television providers.With the introduction of new personal video recorder models, also referred to as PVR's or DVR's, Dish Network has established themselves as a formidable competitor in the areas of price, selection, picture quality, and customer service.My gripe is with their lack of Dolby Digital and 5.1 surround sound channels.It's enough to be a dealbreaker for audiophiles.

This model was a free replacement for an older model satellite receiver being phased out in 2005.A phone call set up the shipment and the process was painless.The receiver contains standard cable jacks for input and output as well as two RCA audio and video outputs, an S video output, and a Dolby Digital connector.With the number of audio/visual devices out there (TV, VCR, DVD, Satellite as well as stereo components), I would have liked to have seen an RCA audio and video input.

Included with the DVR is a built-in infrared "blaster" that works like a remote to control VCR's supported by the device (all major brands.)With this function you can use the satellite receiver to record programs to your VCR instead of the DVR.That said, it can be a daunting task to ensure both the VCR and DVR are set to the correct channels and appropriate TV/video settings or you'll end up recording the wrong program.This is why A/V inputs would be helpful and you'll likely be better off recording the program to the DVR first to transfer to the VCR later.

The Dish Network's customer service staff are some of the finest I have talked to in any company.Not only are they friendly and helpful, but I've found them to be knowledgeable (reducing the need for transfers) and hold times are usually under a minute.After installing the receiver, activation took less than five minutes and we were up and running before I hung up the phone.

Compared to the older receiver, I find this new receiver delivers a sharper picture with improved contrast and clarity.Until now, I gave the nod to DirecTV, but I believe the two are now equal.Dish also fixed some annoyances while channel surfing.In the past, pulling up the Dish guide meant obscuring the entire channel.Now the channel is moved to the right corner of the screen, similar to DirecTV, so you can view the current channel while you scan other channels.Another channel surfing option is to flip through the names (only) of programs on different channels.Unfortunately, this method obscures the top third of the screen with the title of the current channel and the bottom third of the screen with the title of the channels you're flipping through.The size of this obscured screen space could be drastically reduced and still provide the same information.

Another new feature is the ability to display the name and phone number of incoming telephone calls for those subscribing to caller id service through their telephone company.Finally, the old receiver used to suffer severe lag in downloading program descriptions.This problem seems to have disappeared entirely.

On to Digital Video Recording.This is my first experience with DVR's and I must say they have made the process very intuitive.I haven't had to refer to the user manual yet.The most prominent difference between DVR users and those without is the ability to pause live television.This is easily done via a big yellow pause button on the remote.Once this happens, the DVR kicks in and begins recording from the point you pause.To the end user, it simply looks like you hit the pause on a DVD.As soon as you start up again, the DVR continues to record as you watch so you never miss anything.Because you're now watching recorded television, you now have the advantage of skipping past commercials until you reach the point where you're back to a live broadcast.The only drawback is you will lose what you have recorded if you switch to a different channel.The system does prompt you beforehand so you won't switch back to live mode by mistake.The process may sound complicated but it's very painless.If you can operate a VCR, you can operate this DVR.

Programming the DVR to record programs is even easier than a VCR in my opinion.Simply scroll through the guide until you find a program you wish to record, then hit the record button.A prompt comes up, select VCR or DVR, and you're ready to go.I did get a tech to admit that it is possible to record one channel while watching another but they are only offering this service to new subscribers.Apparently, replacing the receivers of existing customers to include this feature will tax the current capacity of their system.If you're limited to recording the same channel you're watching as I am, a timer icon will pop up five minutes prior to warn it's about to flip the channel on you.To access and playback recorded programs, simply hit the button marked "DVR" on your remote and a list of recorded programs will pop up.Scroll through the list until you find the program you want, hit the select button, and you're off and running.

Thanks to DVR, the remote control is now as intuitive as you can get.The standard up/down/left/right controls are used to flip through the channels, the channel guide, and menus, but now you have DVR controls similar to what you would find on a VCR remote.This provides the ability to replace your current VCR remote entirely as all the functions are supported.The Dish remote acts as a universal remote for three devices in addition to the satellite.I just wish there were four devices we could add instead of three.If I didn't have to choose between controlling the home theater system and the DVD player, I could have eliminated all of the remotes in the house.

Perhaps it's better marketing but DirecTV seems to be the provider of choice for sports fans thanks to their all-inclusive sports package.Dish is the winner for music fans thanks to their partnership with Sirius.I counted 140 music channels (although I'm tempted to exclude the 20 or so channels that are broadcast in mono.)

This brings me to my only major gripe with Dish Network - the sound quality.Dish Network broadcasts only HBO, Showtime, and a few Pay-per-View networks in 5.1 or 6.1 surround sound.That's it.All other stations are simply 2-channel stereo, including premium channels.The signal/noise ratio is high enough that you won't hear any hiss, but the channel separation seems to be rather low for regular stereo.I find myself frequently fiddling with the virtual (fake) surround effects to find a setting I like.Anyone used to the immersive effects of true five or six channel digital audio will find the Dish Network sorely lacking.Since most cable companies do not have this limitation, I have a hard time recommending the Dish as an alternative to anyone owning a home theater system.

Finally, a new feature entitled Dish@Home isn't a gripe as much as an example of a really bad business decision.I beta-tested a similar service through a cable company years ago and this isn't any better.The service attempts to provide information such as news, weather, sports scores through your television yet the process is so slow and cumbersome you'll never use it.The games on cellular phones are higher quality and at least a game on a phone is a one-time fee vs. the monthly subscription this service tries to extract from you.I expect Dish@Home to die a quick death.

This thing works wonders for DVD and a must have for front projector users, especially if you have one with subpar video processing.I have an older non progressive scan Sony DVD player (about 6 yrs. old, when they were still $400) and it makes the picture jump out at you.I would go as far and say it is close to HD, depending on the movie. And the other components (HD cable box, XBOX) also show marked improvement.Its strength lies with the deinterlacing and scaling.If you have an older 16:9 monitor that makes your picture look distorted when you watch certain programming i.e. streching or can't see the news ticker, then try an iScan, the image will retain its natural symmetry no matter what the original aspect ratio was on the program.
It won't work miracles, so don't expect it to turn all your sources into HD resolution.This is a good addition to a more serious home theater enthusiest.

The item I received did not match the picture on Amazon.com. The picture shows a connector thinner at the mini HDMI end. The items (I ordered two) I received are the same width at the mini HDMI end and the HDMI end. Consequently they do not fit my Canon camcorder. Attempts to file the end to make it fit revealed metal. Using the filed down connecter results in audio dropouts. Totally useless.

I bought this cable to go from my PS3 to my HD-TV.I was a little leery because it was sooo inexpensive.No need...this works just as it should, signal gets to the TV nice and clean with no issues at all.I have purchased other HDMI cable from retail store and the price for a 6' cable is always at least $20 and sometimes over $30.At under $5 you cannot go wrong with this.I cannot speak for it being capatible with the HMDI 1.3 since I have not tested it but for general HDMI use it is perfect.

Why buy a DP34 switch instead of the DPP44? One great advantage is that it requires no external power. The device uses the power from the receiver to make the switches. The DP-44 requires an external power source. However there are two limitations whch prevents me from giving it five stars. First, you can only have three dish signals (no problem for me since I only have three dish signals). Second, and most importantly, you cannot use this with a dual receiver through one cable line with a splitter. It will not work that way. If you have a dual receiver, you need two lines coming from this switch, which is not possible the way I wired the house. With a DP-44, you can use one line and then split the signal at the receiver with a dish signal splitter. But I do love the simplicity of this device and it works very well with the dish receivers.

I have been wanting one of these for a few months to hook my DirecTv HD receiver and my up-convert DVD player to.I got a gift card over the holidays and didn't hesitate in picking this up.Right out of the box it is very easy to set up.I had it up and working with both components within about 10 minutes.The remote it comes with does the job and the included HDMI cable is just as good as the $40 Philips one that I previously bought.That alone makes this a good value since it is $40 and comes with an HDMI cable.I have no idea if the more expensive switchers are any better, I can just say that I notice no loss in picture quality from when I had my HD receiver hooked up directly to my TV with an HDMI cable.This product will motivate me to buy a Blu Ray player now!

Received the cable today and turned out to be a different cable than what's described at Amazon.The DVI end of the cable turned out to be single link (18 pins), instead of dual link (24 pins).The product picture shows 24 pins, although a customer image, which I didn't see before ordering, does clearly show there are only 18 pins.In the technical details section, it also claims it has 24 pins on DVI end.
I am aware that no where in the product description the manufacturer claims it's a dual link cable.But you have to wonder...

I had a 19" LCD from HP before this, one that PCWorld rated as very good.I think this Sceptre Naga III is soooo much better than that.I prefer the tighter dot pitch of this monitor to standard 19" LCD's.It makes text look much clearer, which is my biggest complaing with 19" LCD's.By the way, I have a NVidia 7800GT, which runs this monitor at its 1680 X 1050 native resolution through a DVI cable just great.

To be honest, I haven't played any games with this thing yet, but movies look great, and I don't see any real ghosting.

In general, I'm one of those people who always find faults with things, but I love this thing, and with the rebate, it's worth every penny.

I, like many people, was debating on whether I should buy a cheap HDMI cable or get an expensive cable such as Monster brand. I used to work at Best Buy in Home Theater and I know how a good cable can make a big difference, but didn't want to spend [..] for good quality. I researched for weeks and finally decided to try this one out because it is 1.3 (the most current standard) and it is a Category 2 cable (best category having Higher-quality construction with thicker wires 24gauge instead of 28gauge).
All I can say is WOW! I was not let down, this cable is just as good as those over priced Monster cables. Thick, High-quality Construction with braiding. GREAT Video Quality and Speed. I couldn't have found a better cable and for such a cheap price [..] after shipping!

I purchased this receiver a few months ago.I wanted to get used to it before writing a review.I own several stereos from various makers but this is the tops!There is all most nothing that this receiver cannot do.

It includes a very simple remote for those that are easily confused by remote controls...as well as a full feature remote that automatically lights itself when you/your hand get near it (nice in a dark room!).Want to access your RX-Z11 via your laptop? no problem - just connect the receiver to your network/laptop!

My only objection is that I do use all of the speaker connections in the back and find it a bit tough to squeeze everything into the tight connection room they give you on the back of the receiver (even when using banana plugs).

I feel that the Yamaha RX-Z11 is THE best receiver on the market bar none!

Once I plugged this in, I noticed a definite improvement on my analog cable signal (signal that doesn't come through a box).And since that was my greatest concern, I would have been happy there.But I also noticed a significant difference with how digital and HD looked afterward as well.What I noticed most was the lack of 'blockiness' that tends to occur with fast moving video images.While there is still some, I think this device eliminated any blockiness that existed due to the signal being split out.
I cannot speak to the long cable runs as my longest run is only about 50 feet, but that run does look great.
My only hangup is that it's pretty clear the manufacturer wants you to use their utility boxes for wiring.Anything else will require some imagination.So if you keep all your RG6/cat5hubs in a cabinet, you may find this a little frustrating to mount.
Otherwise a great piece of equipment.

As a new PS3 160gb owner - I was faced with a 50/60/70/100 dollar HDMI cable choice from the store where I purchased it and other big box stores where the sales people knew less than I did. One very honest and smart guy told me to save my money and buy one from Amazon. So I did... As a backup I purchased the more expensive one as a comparison on my 56" JVC HD-ILA (JVCs DLP projector 720P) and found absolutely no difference on screen with either Blue-Ray disk or Game play ... and returned the $100 one the next day...

I cannot speak of 1080i or 1080p HD sets - but after tax a $100 spread is something worth considering. The PS3 is picky sending signals out to a monitor or TV - but this works as advertised ... and my wallet is all the better for it.

Get these cheap cables. They are as good as expensive Monster cables -- better actually. Why? HDMI is a digital-signal only cable. There is no analog signal to get religious about. Bits is bits. A Monster zero is no more zeroish than a four-dollar cable's zero. Ditto for ones. Here's some fun facts. The HDMI 1.3 spec tells us that all HDMI cables have to be certified as meeting the standard in order to use the HDMI name. HDMI 1.3 runs a 10.2 Gbps (gigabits per second). For perspective, this is 21 times faster than USB 2.0 at 480 Mbps. Fast.

The standard was cleverly designed to be robust, reliable, efficient (low power), high capacity, and LOW COST to manufacture. The HDMI cable contains 4 high-speed low-power differential-signal shielded connections -- in addition to 5 volt power and some low-speed digital signals for devices to talk back and forth to each other. Three of the high-speed connections carry respectively the red, green, and blue uncompressed video bitstreams. The fourth carries a synchronous clock, which cunningly allows the receiving chip to economically recover the bits in the other 3 channels at this extreme speed. Uncompressed audio is also sent (on a time slice basis) over the 3 video channels. Whereas the 1.3 spec supports 10.2 Gbps, your BluRay player rarely exceeds 5 Gbps -- depending on content such as color depth and the number of audio channels. There's plenty of excess capacity in your cheap cable. (Read the FAQ and white papers at HDMI dot ORG for more.)

So why is this dinky cable better than an expensive one? The Expensive Brands have wide-diameter cables with unnecessarily long connectors. This must give the appearance of being totally awesome. However, the wires INSIDE are the same size and layout as for any other HDMI cable. They must be in order to match electrical capacitance, impedance and shielding parameters required conform to the 10.2 Gbps spec. But, importantly, this bulky bloated thickness puts weight and tension on the connectors of your expensive LCD TV and BluRay player and other equip. Why would you want to put mechanical stress on these sockets? Bad idea. And their bits are not better bits: just 0s and 1s.

Review of Philips-HTS3566D - Home theater system with iPod cradle - 5.1 channel

I bought this unit to replace my aging Home Theater system and also take advantage of the capabilities of the HD TV I already own.

First, the "Quick Start" guide tells you everything you need to know to set up the entire unit and get it operational. The Quick Start Guide covers both the HTS3565D unit (standard speaker design) and the HTS3566D which has surround sound towers. The English portion of the guide covers a total of four pages. An additional eight are written in Spanish and French.

Packaged in the box are the unit, remote control and two batteries, an RCA jack patch cable for composite video, FM antenna wire, user manual (in addition to the quick start guide), color coded and keyed speaker wires, screws (for the surround towers) and an iPod docking station. An HDMI cable is NOT included. Speakers are comprised of a center speaker (with one mid-range and two tweeters), two front speakers (each with a tweeter and mid-range), two surround speakers (with three mid-range and one tweeter each), and a sub-woofer with one twelve inch driver. This is a total of sixteen drivers.

All of this is contained in a single box that hides the fact that two towers are part of the system. This is accomplished by making the towers a two part unit that has to be assembled outside the box. All of the other components require no more assembly that hooking up the speakers (a very easy task with the color coding) and hookups for connection to the TV/projector, antenna, and iPod dock.

Assembling and placing all of the components is very easy and took no more than a half-hour if that. The Quick Start Guide is amply illustrated and written instruction very understandable and easy to follow. In fact I'll go so far as stating that the actual manual is almost superfluous.

The menu system surpasses my older unit by a considerable margin. As in the best units it is possible to make a myriad of selections from the menu including fine tuning the volume of each individual speaker via pink noise. Note that this fine tuning can only be done when the unit is in DVD operation mode.

Once operational, the unit supports DVD, AM, FM, two AUX inputs, MP3 input, and iPod input. It also has a pair of RCA jacks for Aux sound from the TV. Naturally this greatly enhances the sound quality of your broadcast television viewing.

The sound quality, while watching DVDs (with sixteen speakers I should not have been surprised) that I have yet to be able to watch a movie at half volume without the fear of disturbing my neighbors. The volume scale goes to forty (40), but I typically have to keep level at ten (10) or one quarter of the maximum volume.

With some tweeking I was able to lower the volume of the sub-woofer enough that I can now dial up a volume setting of fifteen (15). This is still remarkably loud.

I have only three complaints.

The first is minor and was temporary. After connecting the HDMI cable it took a while (maybe fifteen minutes maximum) for the unit to get both the sound and picture in synchronization. In other words I did not have sound for that period of time while the unit made some internal adjustments. This IS covered in the manual (thankfully as I thought I'd bought another defective product) and have not had a problem with it since. Note that the HDMI Audio in the menu system must be OFF to play DVDs through the player's speaker system.HDMI Audio ON is for component home theater receivers separate from the player.

Second, the surround sound speaker wire could be a few feet longer. This cannot be fixed by patching a few extra feet of wire yourself as the wire is already terminated with keyed, color coded connectors.

My third complaint is that the unit did not come with an HDMI cable. With a take home price of nearly $300.00 I would expect Philips to be able to afford throwing in a forty dollar, six foot cable. Naturally, the best picture quality dictates the purchase of this cable. That said the up-conversion is very good and seamless.

Finally, the picture quality is quite good, the sound amazing (the first war film I watched nearly blew me off the couch), and the reliably what I've come to expect from Philips. After having bought a competitor unit that did not work new out of the box, I was a bit apprehensive about this purchase. But after a month of use I am very happy with it. The external design in clean and complementary to most home decor. The picture and sound quality excellent and now I no longer anticipate buying a Blu-Ray unit at twice the price along with the associated high cost of Blu-Ray discs.

I feel I've made a good purchase.

Great product for the price. I did the super saver shipping which took about a week longer that regular shipping but was free so it's worth it if you aren't in a hurry. The set up was very easy compared to other systems I've tried. I'm very happy with the sound. I tried the Phillips 2-channel sound bar prior to buying this and there is no comparison. It took a little time to figure out all the settings and we finally figured out that you have to hit the surround sound enhance button on the remote to get the 5-channel to work with the TV mode and radio mode. The speaker wire that came with the system is worthless. You definitely need to upgrade.

Ever since I discovered this player in the summer of 2005, I have been highly impressed with how much it met both my normal and oddball demands.As a student of Musical Theatre, Opera, Classical vocal and choral literature, and Jazz and Classical piano, DVD-AUDIO and SACD capabilities are of great importance to me because there are a lot of titles especially in the Classical genre available in these formats.One thing that sets this player apart from the other manufacturers' players is Yamaha's CD UpSampling feature.For those titles which are currently only available on CD and possibly will never be released on DVD-AUDIO and/or SACD, this option converts standard CDs to the quality of DVD-AUDIO.On the Musical Theatre, Opera, and choral side of things, this player is capable of playing both NTSC (North American) and PAL (European) DVDs on corresponding as well as opposite TVs.For certain titles in these genres, the North American editions are either four percent slower in tempo and picture movement and flatter in pitch than the European editions due to the method of PAL-to-NTSC conversion used by the distributors of such DVDs, or do not include as many bonus features as their original European counterparts.Sometimes, it can be the other way around, except the European editions might be four percent faster and sharper and have less bonus material than their original North American counterparts.On both ends of the spectrum, if the audio pitch is corrected without changing the audio speed to keep the picture and sound in synch, a subaudible breaking-up effect may be noticed as the result of slight artifacts from slightly bending or stretching the pitch in the conversion process.However, because of this player's bicompatibility with both color systems, I have the freedom to choose and purchase whatever editions are the best.Although it is not in the manual, this player can be made multi-region compatible including RCE DVDs.Turn on the DVD player.Make sure there are no discs loaded.With the tray open, using its supplied remote control, slowly press 99990.Wait for the 'Region 0' message to disappear.Close the tray.Now you can play any kind of optical disc without thinking about it.The only little flaw with this player's firmware is that when the 'All Discs' repeat mode is selected, when playing DVDs, after playing through all the titles, instead of moving on to the next disc, it returns to the home menu.If Yamaha could do a minor revision to the firmware which engages that same menu bipass as when repeating a single DVD, the machine would change DVDs automatically.I discovered this by reauthoring DVDs without any of their menus using DVD Shrink Version 3.2.In conclusion, if you are looking for a DVD player with one hundred percent compatibility all across the board, you have come to the right place!*In fact, I currently use one of these in my bedroom, and by the spring or summer of 2006, I plan on either going the separate component route and getting another one for my livingroom, or more than likely, getting its integrated home cinema counterpart, the Yamaha DVX-C700 because of how great Yamaha's DVD technology is.*Others have reported problems playing 'Dual Discs'--a type of disc which includes DVD-VIDEO on one side or layer, and CD DIGITAL AUDIO on another, also known as 'Hybrids.'However, big names, such as Panasonic, Sony, and Pioneer, do not recommend using these discs in their players.This is not to be confused with 'Hybrid' type SACDs, which many, including the Yamaha DVDC750 will support.

Review of Dishnetwork ViP722 DVR HD Receiver

Wow. I am really trying to like Dish Network. I recently switched from DirecTV after being a DirecTV subscriber since the mid 90's. When told it would take almost 6 weeks for a DirecTV service person to come out and replace my dish, I looked into Dish Network, liked what I saw and switched. They were able to have someone out the next day. The price was a lot less for more programming than I was getting from DirecTV. The HD content is wonderful. Their installation guy was hard working and professional and their customer service people were excellent. The only DVR they had was the VIP722. I had TIVO's with DirecTV. Long story short, My first VIP722 died after about 3 weeks. I went through the disconnect, reconnect routine a number of times. I tried plugging it directly into the wall instead of a surge protector or battery backup. Noting seemed to help. To Dish's credit, they were quick to replace it by 2nd day shipping the replacement. I've now had the replacement connected for almost a week and am now getting weird video/audio syncing issues, random reboots, freezes, fast forward stuttering followed by more freezes. In other words, annoying reliability/quality issues. I thought my first unit might have had a cooling issue so with this one, I made sure there was extra ventilation and placed a usb powered external fan on the back/left side to help pull heat out. Off topic but I purchased this along with another external fan for my Onkyo 806 to solve a heat issue with that. If you have an Onkyo unit that gets extremely hot, the fan did the trick. Back to the VIP722: If this one complete fails like the first, I'll give it a go with a third. If that fails, I'll have to cancel my Dish subscription and either go back to DirecTV or cable. Fios isn't available in my area unfortunately. The VIP isn't in the same league as Tivo in many respects, quality and reliability being just two. Regardless and in spite of a relatively non-intuitive interface and a lack of a 'it just works' TIVO record, I was willing to make the change. Boy do I miss my TIVO's. Dish really needs to work this out. Losing subscriptions over a loser of a DVR/receiver would be a shame because in every other respect, Dish is a great service.

UPDATE, 05/08/2009: I'm on my third 722 but this one works flawlessly. No video syncing issues, stuttering video, freezing or constant reboots. The only thing I did differently was to NOT connect this to the internet. This is wild speculation but I feel like the unreliability I experienced with the other two might have been related to software updates via the ethernet connection. Now that I have one that works reliably, I'd give it a 4 star review if Amazon's system allowed for a rating change. TIVO is still the benchmark but once you get used to the 722's interface, everything works well.

I bought this tv as an upgrade from an analog set.I was aiming at getting a screen that was big enough (but not TOO big) for me to not feel as though I should have gotten the bigger size.To date, I am 90% satisfied with the purchase.

It's very convenient that the HD tuner is integrated into the television.When I brought this set home from the store I was able to plug in my set of amplified rabbit ears and immediately receive the local HD broadcasts.Ironically, even though I have a digital cable subscription, I still use my rabbit ears intermittently because Comcast hasn't negotiated a contract with CBS for their HD signal.Strange, but true.

I had no problems with the construction of the TV when it was unboxed.There were no noticable flaws or defects, and I haven't noticed any sort of physical flaws or defects over the course of my initial ownership.The size and weight of this set is excellent.Carrying it up and down stairs is only a two-man job because it weighs just under 80lbs.It's also very slender at only 15.25 inches (387mm) deep, which gives my lots of placement options.

The picture quality is excellent when viewing from a distance greater than six feet - any closer than that and the clarity breaks down a bit.Due to the size of the picture, the standard (NTSC) resolution images are rather grainy, but the HD images are excellent.There are clear edges, good color saturation, and off-axis viewing is surprisingly good too.It takes a second or so for the processor to switch formats if you're changing from an analog signal to a HD signal, but I'm getting used to that.I just love the depth of color and brightness that you get with a DLP set - better than current LCD and just a notch below plasma, IMHO.

There are plenty of inputs for my home theater equipment, and the built in multi-format flash card reader was a nice surprise.The front accessible panel also has both standard A/V inputs and an S-video input, which is also quite convenient.The layout of the rear inputs is easy to negotiate, and I was able to find connections for all of my home theater devices (digital receiver, digital cable box, DVD player) with no problems.And the owner's manual provides setup suggestions for various combinations of components.At the current time I am only using the component and optical digital signal inputs, and have nothing to comment on regarding the HDMI or IEEE1394 connections.

Due to my digital cable with HDTV package subscription I have to use a cable box supplied by my provider.I was advised that I wouldn't be able to receive premium services if I opted to use the Cable Card slot.

The remote is large and kind of confusing to navigate, and there seems to be a low level high-pitched whine when the backlight buttons feature is active.And though I've made a few different attempts to set up the TheaterNet device control system, I haven't been able to get it to work as smoothly as I'd have liked (but this point would be moot if you plan to use a universal remote.)

Now on the negative side of things; I've had to completely reboot the processor several times over the first few months that I've owned this TV.The HD signal processing software seems to be a mite touchy at times and can go into complete brainlock, which is what forces the reboot.Also, there seemed to be an issue with the POP (picture-outside-of-picture) feature that caused a similar lockup when I tried to view two broadcast HDTV signals simultaneously.This could have been due to user error in retrospect, and all problems have been solved without having to contact tech support.

Because this is a rear-projection set, I will eventually have to replace the projection bulb assembly.I've heard other owners say that they've had problems in ordering a replacement bulb because Toshiba is backordered at the present time.I can't confirm or deny this rumor.However, it appears that the bulb assembly replacement procedure is simple enough, and the access hatch is conveniently located so I won't have to move the set in order to get to it.

All in all, I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase and would definitely recommend this particular model to anybody who is shopping for an entry-level widescreen HDTV.The price, size, and features are all very good in comparison to other TVs of similar size and design.

Since I have written my review, I have had to replace the projection bulb assembly.This was covered under warranty and done via the Toshiba Customer Service working through a local service rep.It took a reasonable amount of time to get my set back up and running and their online/telephone service was very helpful and courteous.I hope that the replacement bulb assembly lasts longer than the first one did though...

Review of Panasonic PT-AE700U High-Definition Home Cinema LCD Projector

Don't be fooled by the low price of this projector. Until DLP HD+ Projectors drop to this price range there is nothing that can come close to beating this projectors value for money. The new breed of LCD projectors have come a long way in displaying BLACK close to true black with high contrast ratios.

I shopped around a lot for projectors and seen projectors from Runoco, Sony, Sim, Marantz, etc which vary in price from 3k to well over 15K. I wouldn't say this Panasonic is the best but for the price I am paying, I am really not losing much of quality gain. I project the picture on 100" screen from Carada (another value/quality company) and it did nothing less than 'WOW' many of my friends who watched movies on it.

The picture looks very bright and sharp and colors are very vivid. The build quality of the projector is also excellent. You will not go wrong with this purchase. With little tweaking, the picture quality can be improved a lot. You can find intructions to do that at avsforums another well known Home Theater forums. But, please make sure you know what you are doing before you attempt the tweaking.

I agree with most of the posts here about the garbage that is the HR20, but it has improved greatly since October.Nevertheless, it si so unreliable that I had to get DirecTV to re-connect my 5 year old TiVo (for free) to catch all the programs this thing misses.They have sent out numerous updates, but it seems that they are spending more time enabling features to make the thing appear to be better than TiVo rather than addressing basic recording (that's what a DVR is for right?).It is like a high end car with an awesome stereo, and brakes that don't work.I nearly left DirecTV over this thing, and I've been with them since 1995!

I cant say enough about these awesome cables! These HDMI cables are a great deal compared to Best Buys Monster rip-off or the same Cable that cost over $100 a piece! I bought two of these shipped for less than $50. My HD cable, PS3, & blueray, all look and sound gorgeous. Do yourself a favor and buy your HDMI cords here at a fantastic price, I also received them within 3 days! Great deal, dont be ripped off at an electronics store!!!!

Review of Infinity TSS-CENTER4000 Center channel speaker Platinum

I have been upgrading my Infinity 450 5.1 speaker system by adding a pair of Infinity Primus (replacing older Boes bookshelf speakers), and finally, replacing the 2-way center channel speaker that came with the 450 system with the Infinity TSS 4000 3-way center channel speaker.

After hooking it up I immediately noticed a great improvement to the depth of the music I played.In my small space you can really feel the pump of the music from the TSS 4000 center channel speaker - feeling as if it has real power to match it's (heavy) weight.

As it turns out the TSS 4000 is indeed powerful; with the old 450 center I had to keep the level all the way up for it to really do it's job and match the rest of the speaker system, but with the TSS 4000 center I found I had to turn down the level to properly compliment the rest of the system, allowing the other speakers sound to blend with the center channel sound rather than compete or be overwhelmed by it.

After making that adjustment though the improvement to the quality of sound became much more evident.I find that the music sounds just as good at lower volumes as it does at higher volumes, and where before I noticed some slight window and wall rattling when playing music loud, with the TSS 4000 there is no such rattling indicating a definite overall improvement to the sound system just from the additionof the TSS 4000 center speaker.

Getting the TSS 4000 3-way center speaker as an upgrade to the standard 2-waymakes perfect sense once you realize how much the center channel contributes the overall sound of a 5.1 system - and how the better the quality of sound coming from the more capable TSS 4000 can improve the overall sound of any standard 5.1 package system.

I definitely recommend anyone customizing their (package) 5.1 sound system in general, and I really recommend starting with the Infinity 450 (or other Infinity package systems) as a superior choice.After that, cutomizing an already great system with improved manufacturer compatible speaker elements - such as the Infinity TSS 4000 Center Channel just makes better sense.

Just read the title above.It's as simple as that.I paid $10 for this cable, maybe $15 with shipping, and it works just fine.I went to Best Buy and asked the salesperson why I should pay $160 for a Monster brand cable that does the same thing... he couldn't give me an answer that would justify paying $150 more than I did.You'd have to be a moron to buy those $160 Monster cables... or just really, really, wealthy!
